Once upon a time...
I dreamed of being the next Don McCullin (see here for a little
taster, and use the next link on that page to see a few more photos if you
are not familiar with his work).
Then reality kicked in.
Today, I'd probably settle for being the next Ansel Adams (this is a wonderful
site).
And as much as I love London, you can't beat a day (or more) out in wide open
places for sloughing off the stress. Silence, apart from the sound of the wind
whipping into you. Space to think. Or just let your mind freewheel. So it's no
surprise that a lot of the pictures here are big moody landscapes.
I don't do weddings. I only shoot things that appeal to me. I can go out with a
camera and, if the inspiration isn't there, taking nothing all day. Or, if my
eye is in a groove, three rolls of film will go in a flash.
A word for the anoraks...
Almost everything was shot on a Canon A1. An ageing warhorse that has given
me years of loyal service. If I had to choose my best friend in the world...
I have an assortment of lenses from 24mm to 500mm. If I go out walking for the
day, the rucksack often contains more camera gear than walking gear.
The film is usually 400ASA. I'd rather suffer a bit of grain than be tied to a
tripod.
The pictures on here have been scanned from the negative, and, on the whole,
have not had much done to them in Photoshop. One day (maybe) I'll find the time
to go back and do some serious work on some of the images.
Yes, I'd love to go down the digital route. But add up the cost of a digital
SLR, two if not three lenses, spare batteries, extra storage... and you are
looking at a lot of money. I did, though, recently pick up a little 4 megapixel
Konica for little more than £100 to slip in my pocket for times when I didn't
want to lug the serious gear around. I have been remarkably impressed with its
performance so far; all of the Brooklands, Cornwall and east Devon pictures
were taken using it,
A word for the non-anoraks...
Enjoy.
Most people who have seen these have said flattering things.
I've got some really good shots from Venice and Barcelona and ... that I want
to find time to scan soon.
The increasing number of thumbnails meant this page was starting to get a bit
unwieldy and slow to load. So each subject now has its own page, with just one
image here as a "taster"
