Mention Essex and don't be surprised if people recoil in horror. Sharon and Tracey and Darren and Wayne have a lot to answer for. But the county isn't all about white stilettos and souped-up saloons with garish go-faster body kits despite the first image, which fits the stereotype perfectly.
Explore a little further and discover the expanses of salt marshes. Turn your back on the built-up areas and step into a different world. It's just a matter of looking in the right places. Even Benfleet (not a place likely to appear high on the list of Essex's attractions) has an intriguing little backwater.
